    I live in a jurisdiction where i can't only carry 3 guns on my permit. It's summer time. Atm I carry my Taurus 856 executive grade 3" defender model. This time of year we are going to the mountains more. I hope the BB 158 grain is enough. If I could have added my Taurus 65 to my permit I would have. I think it's stupid we can't carry anything we are proficient in...but hey that's LA county for you

    At last, a well performing 380 round. I am not a 380 advocate, but a nedium size 380 can be a good choice for some with low hand strength, recoil sensitivity, etc. Guns like your M&P EZ, the Beretta 84, or the recent Briwning 1911 are fairly easy to shoot, and the longer barrels help the ballistics. The 38 did well for a medium weight bullet. Another solid choice. Good choice on the 3" revolver too. I wish more companies made 3" revolvers. The only one i have is a Rossi 720 44 Spl, which is a nice little sleeper. But that is another story. Great test

    For me, i would lean toward the 110 in my SP-101. The performance looks almost exactly like what Marshall and Sanow reported in the late 80's. I doubt the load has changed. In a high density living situation like an apartment, condo or townhouse, the lower penetration can be a good thing. There is the additional benefit that the perp will be blinded and scorched. If he manages to get away, he will be easier for the police to find, dazed and confused and scorched. Lol. For home defense though, the 38 158 gr +p, like the Buffalo Bore, is probably the way to go. Less flash and blast, but just be careful with your shots due to the greater penetration. Nothing wrong with the 158's. Probably very good from a 3" or 4" gun for a woods/animal defense load also. Great tests.

    Definitely an informative test. I really like that you use the fiber board in addition to the denim. To my knowledge, nobody else does that and I feel that it gives more of a realistic depiction of bullet performance.

    It seems to me that the new iwners of the Cor Bon name have been resting on the laurels of the original company. That is too bad, because they have some load with great ballistics, like 38 Super that approaches 357 Sig territory. Back in revolver days in LE, the full power 110's (usually a SHHP design) had a good record, almost as good as the 125's. The reduced 110's, like the Win USA are also good. They are the old "Treasury" 38 +p+ load in a magnum case. Nickel plated brass and sealed primers, so it should store well. Rated at 1250 fps i think, from a 4" barrel. It has long been a favorite practice load. I think they still make it. Less recoil and blast too

    Very nice. Federal got it right. These will be excelkent in either barrel length. My 2.25" SP-101 would be great with this. It is 4 or 5 oz heavier than your 605, which will help with recoil. The 3" K6 i still want is about the same weight as the Ruger also. Should also be excellent for hiking/trail/animal defense in either barrel length. Love the consistency. Great test, and thank you, Federal!

  • @troy9477

    Sounds like Fort Scott needs better powder measures, to throw consistent charges. The 357 reminds me of the old Remington "midrange" load, which was 125 gr SJHP at 1225 fps. Seemed to expand enough for defense, and with less recoil, flash, and blast. I have long thought, for defense in a 44 mag, 200 or 210 gr at 1200-ish fps might be the sweet spot. Recoil, flash, and blast would be less, and you would have enough power without it being too much. Yes i know, this is comparable to 10mm ballistics, but the bullet is fatter. Also, the 10mm is usually not as fast as its loudest fanboys claim. I think the ammo companies must be thinking like me, because the Silvertip is 210 gr, and the Gold Dot is available in 200 or 210 not sure which. Anyway, my 2 cents on the 44. There is better ammo out there for it.

    The old school SJHP bullets have always seemed to do well. I would venture to guess that these loads are or were the most widely used by handgun hunters in their respective cartridges. May have been supplanted by Hornady XTP by now, but they are still excellent. Probably still my go to for a woods/trail load in a 357. My only 44 mag handgun is a 7.5" SBH, so it is basically a range toy. Been wanting a more carryable DA 44, and u have interested me in the S&W M69. And since i have a couple of L frame holsters already, it makes sense. But if i could find a good price on a 3" 629 (or 657😁).......

  • @troy9477
    @troy9477 23 часа назад

    Slightly reduced loads often have a useful place. For years Rem made a 357 mag 125 gr SJHP rated at 1225 fps, and labeled medium velocity. It had a good rep. Another one is the Win USA 357 110 gr SJHP, rated at 1200 or 1250. This is basically the old 38 +p+ "Treasury" load in a nickel magnum case. It also has primer sealant, so it should store well. Old favorite for practice ammo, esp for shorter barrel lengths, like a 2.5" K frame or 2.25" SP-101. The 10mm and 41 Mag Silvertips are slightly reduced too. Fiocchi makes pretty good ammo at a lower price. I have shot a fair bit of their 38 Spl and a little bit of the 357. Nothing wrong with the performance of that 357, although slightly more consistent expansion would be good. Probably make a good woods/trail load. Not sure egat the 44 is fir. Hunting, maybe. Looks to me like practice ammo only, which is fine. They make 44 Spl SJHP as well (either 180 or 200 gr, i forget which). I had high hopes for it, but the testing i saw showed no expansion. I think i would like to have a M69 like yours, mostly shooting warm 44 Spl, like the BB 190 gr LSWCHP. Anyway, good test as always

  • @troy9477
    @troy9477 День назад

    I think i watched these out of order. I posted a comment in the followup video with the faster load. If the bullet can be made hard enough, i bet it would be interesting in 35 Rem at 1400 fps or so. Or my 357 Herrett Contender. I winder if there is a mould for a 190 or 200 gr wide flat nose- or a Keith SWC😁. As i said there, running this up to around 1000 fps in a magnum load might be very interesting also. Thump. That would whack a silhouette, or settle a critter's hash. It looks like the ammo companies knew what they were doing in the 60's. Had i been a cop back then, i would have carried this until the 158 +p came out in 72. As it is, i started with 357 Gold Dots in 95-96, and progressed to a P229 in 97. Good times back then. The world made more sense. STAY SAFE!

    The 200 grain round nose .38 Spl. lost favor in law enforcement because most departments issued 4" revolvers. From a 4" revolver the 200 grain lead round nose projectiles would fail to penetrate the body of the standard vehicle. Many were found to fail to penetrate the laminated side and back glass of vehicles especially if fired at much of an angle. (Du Pont laminating plastic for auto glass was some pretty tough stuff.)

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam День назад

      Depends on how you look at it. The .327 Federal Magnum defensive ammo is the same cost as .357 Magnum or .38 Special in the same brand. Same for most other brands of defensive ammo. The only time one might consider it expensive, is when someone buys the only few rounds that exist for target shooting, the American Eagle. American Eagle is notorious for high cost though. My point, is I don't see it any more expensive to shoot or carry than other revolver calibers, just harder to find the ammo.

    Perfect - I was looking for a video with .44 Mag 255 gr Underwood ammo and I FOUND IT! THANKS - that is the exact load I use in my woods gun and I wanted to see how it performs in a test like this. I think it is sufficient in black bear country, but shot placement always counts, too. I was watching other videos you had with the 305 Underwood hard cast - hard recoil isn't it? Yeah - and the 255 gr Underwood hard cast is much better to manage isn't it? Yeah - and I think plenty of power, too. I find I can manage it fine, going into the 300+ gr becomes tough to manage even in a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag. This was a great demonstration of what this can do. Also, the lower velocity from the gun versus what Underwood advertises it as in the .44 Mag is likely due to shorter barrel than test barrel used to advertise velocity on the box and they always seem to put velocity under optimal conditions. It's probably about right for the barrel length you have and still a formidable soldier out in the woods. Thanks again, you ROCK!

      Funny you should ask. I have a box each of Velocitor and these Interceptors sitting, ready for a test. I am testing them in the TX22 probably in about a week, video might not be out for another week and a half or so. But, considering I tested the Velocitor yesterday in a rifle and was averaging only 1,300 FPS out of it's 1,435 FPS rated, I am predicting that these Interceptors will do better. Edit - btw the ones I plan to test soon are hollow points, as where these were round nose.

    • @GunSam

      Stingers in a pistol aren't nearly as good as people would have you believe. They are basically the same energy as typical .22 LR ammo, did the same thing from a pistol a typical .22 LR round does, not expand and barely penetrate enough.

    Love the old school heavyweight. When i get a real place and can set up my reloading stuff, i will definitely exoeriment with them. I exoect it will be fairly easy to get them going around 1000 fps in a magnum case. That would certainly settle a critter's hash. Anybody make a mould for a 200 gr Keith SWC? 😁 The other thing that might be interesting is the 357 Herrett barrel for my Contender. Might have to cast them a little hard, or go with a more mid-range load, probably 1200-1400 fps. That would thump silhouettes nicely. It sounds like the 600-650 fps range is the best for 38 Spl. Sounds like the ammo companies knew what they were doing back in the 60's. I have seen 200 gr loading data for the 40 S&W as well. I am sure Berry's makes a 200 gr plated bullet for the 10mm. Might be fun in a 40. Too bad you don't have a 41 Mag. You could test the police load in that- 215 gr SWC at about 950 fps. Come to think of it, a full wadcutter would be interesting. Probably in the 220-230 gr range, unless they made it shorter. But heavy is good for medium velocity wadcutters. Ask Jim Cirillo

    Also, years ago i found that a medium size 380 can be a great training gun. An LE colleague brought his wife to my club for training, before getting her CCW permit. 2 of the guns he brought did not work well for her. The SCCY was one step above junk. My old Kel-Tec P11 was better. His ond S&W 459 did not fit her hand, and the Pachmayr grip made it worse. However, the Beretta 84 that he brought was great. Modest recoil, smooth trigger, the good accuracy that blowback guns often have, and i even liked the smooth walnut grips. I can't really get behind 380 for defense, although it does seem to work for some people. But in a midsize gun like the Beretta or the EZ, it makes a good trainer

    Nice test as always. A few years ago, Fortune Cookie 45 LC had a video where he was getting substantially better velocities with handloads within standard pressure limits. Unique and Herco i think. New Starline brass. As we know from rifles, a shorter powder column tends to burn more efficiently. Certainly there is less wasted air space than in a 38 Spl. It was food for thought. The 38 S&W had a mild resurgence back when, due to the importation of all the S&W "Victory" revolvers made for the British in WW2. Their 380-200, as they called it, was a heavy bullet 38 S&W. They were also made in 38 Spl for our troops of course, mainly pilots. 38 S&W ballistics are about the same as the 38 Short Colt here. Some if the omd rounds are still reasonably capable, and of course they make great mild training ammo. But they tend to be expensive due to lower economies of scale. Lots of fun though

    Great breakdown, Sam. Good fact gathering. The Silvertip has been redesigned at least twice since then, but the changes are not visually apparent. They changed to jacket material from aluminum to (i think) gilding metal, and at some point they changed the internal skiving somewhat in an effort to control expansion. You forgot the fact that Ed Mireles fired his 870 at the car one handed, to empty (4 rounds). Also, there was at least 1 MP-5 on scene, in the trunk of a car (probably Jerry Dove's car, since he was SWAT trained. Pity he didn't have it close at hand. A 3 round burst to the head at relatively close range (say 15 yards or less) is easy to do with its good sights, and may have stopped the whole incident early. He also could have hosed the passenger compartment if necessary, depending on the angle, bystanders, etc. i have always heard that Dove used a 469, but 0.5" diff in barrel length is academic. The Silvertip gets unjustly maligned. It actually did quite well. Not many jacketed handgun bullets of the time would have done better, except maybe some 357's (most likely 158 gr; the 125's tended to have shallow penetration and a lot of fragmentation, but had good hydrostatic shock/temporary cavity dynamics, which helped with energy dump). Anyway, there was a good LE training video/debrief of this incident, which was shown in my academy- long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Lol. We can thank the FBI's search for truth for giving us the 10mm Lite, the S&W 1076, the 40 S&W (in my long seving P229), and standardized testing methodology which ked to large improvements in bullet design and performance. Various rounds resulted directly from this, starting i think with the Hydra-Shok, and continuing through the Golden Saber, Gold Dot, and later the Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty, to name a few. Existing ammo was also improved, seeking optimal velocities and causing changes in "standard" ammo lines. We really do have an embarrassment of riches in recent years where ammo performance is concerned.

I practice with it around 7-15 yards as that is about what I would expect in an encounter with a dangerous predator (black bear specifically for me). I had no problems getting tight grouping, a tad less with double action but still well within black on a "pie plate." 305 gr IS narly (I have Grizzly loads in that) and I don't like it - honestly a bit too strong for me. Even the 270 gr jacketed SP flat nose by Buffalo Bore is REALLY strong, so I go with Underwood 255 gr hard cast in .44 Mag and it's absolutely GREAT! Very manageable (for me) average size male hands I am guessing, recoil isn't so bad, very accurate and plenty of power. I use it as my hiker/hunter backup woods carry and don't go in the big bear woods without it. I trust mine, BUT it does require practice. May want to try the 255 gr hard cast Underwood in .44 Mag and retest this - I think you'll have better results and I'd bet a beer on it. Sam, great videos thanks for taking the time, effort and cost to give us a quality presentation.

    Funny thing, this Rossi is build in Brazil, but is restricted for Brazilian to own (bc is a semi auto long gun), but a .357 lever action is permitted.

    Nice video - I have a .357 Mag S&W Model 60 1 7/8" barrel I bought back in 1996. Great gun, but "snappy" with .357 loads. I lost the cylinder release and happened to go to S&W plant in Springfield Massachusetts where they replaced it for free (excellent customer service). They did say this model wasn't designed to shoot a heavy diet of .357 but if I do to ensure the screws are tightened after a day at the range. Haven't had any issues with it and I have fired hard cast 180 gr Buffalo Bore through it and actually handled it fine surprisingly. Even with stock rubber grips it isn't "painful" to shoot, just heavy recoil as you know. I used to carry it as my woods gun/backup hunter and against black bear while hiking but decided to eventually go with a .44 Mag Ruger Redhawk. The 5.5" Redhawk is heavier and bulkier, but wanted higher power if facing an aggressive large black bear. I've still got my S&W revolver, don't want to part with it.

    40 grain bullet vs 115+ grain bullet 🤔 Think I'll stick with the 9mm ....The so called FBI ballistic tests are actually the United States Army's test 🤪🇺🇲

    Definitely works. Especially if you carry more than one or carry a Schofield and spped loader.

    U nové zbraně to jde jednoduše. Díky tomuto videu jsem revolver po 3 letech rozebral a rozhodně to nešlo tak lehce 😊.

    I hadn't heard about the Lipsey's revolvers. Hopefuy the will submit them for testing so they will get on the Kalifornia risger (which is a total scam of course- it has nothing to do with dafety and everything to do with power and control, and limiting our choices). Anyway, a couple of years ago you started making we want that LCR, so it is on the list. If course i would mostly be shooting H&R for practice ammo, so these tests are useful

    I think the biggest difference is too many manufacturers loading right at expansion velocities for their test barrel in 9mm. Since none of us use test barrel length for carry purposes, we get suboptimal performance. The .327 has higher pressure and velocity, and a shorter test barrel is used, so we are more likely to see the performance we are looking for.

    So I don't know much about the .327 but I feel like it is kind of meant to be to .38 what .30sc is to 9mm. Am I in the ballpark?
